11th January 2006 - Charnwood Forest Canal

A walk along the disused Charnwood Forest Canal, the towpath is now a public footpath.

This wide area at Nanpantan looks like it might have been the old basin.
The canal brought coal from the Charnwood Forest mines to the terminus at Nanpantan.
Here it was loaded onto horsedrawn trams and taken to the wharf at Loughborough and from there it could be
transported anywhere in the country by narrowboat.

I was surprised to see most of the canal still had water in it, although
perhaps it's a different story in the Summer (another trip later in the year perhaps!)

Eventually the towpath leads through Longcliffe Golf Club until it meets the M1.
The course of the canal continues the other side of the canal up to Thringstone.

And if you wanted evidence of global warming, how about blossom in January!
